“Drumline: A New Beat” Delivers 3.3 Million Viewers

Last night’s premiere of the highly anticipated VH1 Original Movie “Drumline: A New Beat,” did not miss a beat drawing in 2.4 million total viewers and averaging a 1.4 in the key Adult 18-49 demo during its 9PM* premiere.  When combined with the 11:30PM* encore, 3.3 million total viewers tuned in to watch the Atlanta A&T drumline burn up the field Monday night. Produced in partnership with Fox Television Studios, and executive produced by the original film producers Wendy Finerman, Dallas Austin, Jody Gerson and Lisa Zupan, along with Nick Cannon, the film generated even higher ratings in the female demo averaging a 2.3 rating among Women 18-34. In addition, “Drumline: A New Beat” is now the #4 cable original movie of the year among Women 18-34. The film also dominated Twitter last night. According to the Nielsen SocialGuide, “Drumline: A New Beat” was the #1 most social show on all of TV last night (excluding sports) garnering over 18 twitter topics about the movie. “Drumline: A New Beat” was the #1 trending topic on Facebook throughout both the east and west coast premieres. “Drumline: A New Beat” captured the rhythm and spirit of the first film while introducing a whole new class to the Atlanta A&T drumline. The new story follows female lead Danielle “Dani” Raymond, an upper class Brooklyn girl who defies her parents in order to attend Atlanta A&T so she can join – and revitalize – their once-prominent drumline. Dani’s quest to become the first female section leader will be hampered by upperclassmen, including her cousin Tyree, her feelings for fellow bandmate and rival Jayven and the school’s crosstown competitors. The cast included Alexandra Shipp, Jeff Pierre, Jordan Calloway, Jasmine Burke, Scott Shilstone, LeToya Luckett and Deray Davis. The franchise also welcomed back Leonard Roberts as the new band director and original “Drumline” favorite Nick Cannon. “Drumline: A New Beat” is the most recent movie part of VH1’s successful push into scripted programming following the success of the networks hit series “Hit The Floor” and original movie “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story.” Last year VH1 delivered the highest-rated original cable movie of 2013 among adults 18-49 with “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story.” “Drumline: A New Beat” is executive produced by Wendy Finerman (Wendy Finerman Productions), Jody Gerson, Lisa Zupan, Dallas Austin and Nick Cannon through his NCredible Entertainment banner, as well as Maggie Malina, Alexander A. Motlagh of POPFilms and Michael Goldman. Susan Levison and Jill Holmes are executive producers for VH1.  Bille Woodruff is directing.  Script by Regina Hicks & Karin Gist.
